A list of 12 amazing small porch fall decorating ideas. These items are a must when you’re ready for some fall decorating.
Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. I love everything about fall. I love the crisp cool air, the cozy campfires, and the beautiful changing colors of the trees. Not only is the weather perfect, but I get to haul out all of the fall decor. It’s so much fun to decorate for fall!
In this post, I’m going to be talking about how you can dress up your front porch with fall decor. There are 12 elements that I think are essential in decorating for fall.

1.Pumpkins
We all love pumpkins right?? I know I do! When I see pumpkins, I immediately think of chilly evenings, cozy sweaters, and changing leaves. And most importantly, NOT collapsing from heat stroke when I walk outside! Although that may not be the case where you are, but we’re down in Southern California, so this is how it is. Anyways, I digress…
A fall porch would not be complete without PUMPKINS! They epitomize everything fall. And why?? because the fall is when pumpkins are in season and are being harvested. They symbolize the season of harvest.
There are so many places that you can get pumpkins. You can buy them at your local grocery stores or retail stores like target and walmart. I personally like buying my pumpkins at ALDI, because they’re only about $3.00 each! Compared to more than $10 from other stores.
You can also get your pumpkins from the pumpkin patch. They’re usually more pricey, but you’re paying for the experience. It’s really a lot of fun to take the kids and make an afternoon out of it. There are always fun things to do like hay rides, corn mazes, or even little rides and games.
But you don’t have to get real pumpkins. You can opt for faux pumpkins which has become increasingly popular. You can even get the carvable fake pumpkins! I love this, because after you have worked so hard to create a beautiful design on your pumpkin, you don’t have to trash it after a couple of days! You can also get faux pumpkins from so many different places now. You will find them at pretty much every craft or home decor store, and you can even buy them online.
These pumpkins are on Amazon!
I think it’s great to have a bunch of pumpkins displayed in all different sizes. It’s also fun to mix and match different colored pumpkins, like throwing in some green or peach fairytale pumpkins with the regular pumpkins. Or doing ALL white pumpkins for a simple yet elegant fall look. There are so many different ways to decorate with pumpkins!
2. Lanterns
Lanterns are gorgeous! They work all year round, but they are particularly lovely for decorating for fall.
I love adding lanterns to the porch to create a beautiful glowing ambience. They especially look wonderful in the evening when the flameless candles come on and the porch emits this amazing golden amber glow.
I like placing lanterns of different sizes together. For example, placing a 20”, a 16”, and say a 10” together looks great because of the difference in height. Or placing lanterns on either side of the porch, to create some symmetry, is always an eye-catching look.
I love these classic black metal lanterns from Walmart, they come in three different sizes, and the price is amazing!
3. Signs
I love adding in some beautiful fall signs into my porch decor. I especially like wood signs because I think that the warmth from the wood is perfect for fall. You can do welcome signs, pumpkin patch signs, or “hello fall” signs, there are so many!
I decided to make my own “hello fall” sign, because I have wanted one for awhile and thought it would be fun to make one myself. If you’d like to know how to make this sign for yourself, I have a post here with a tutorial.
4. Mums
The next element needed for a fall porch is some fall flowers. More specifically, MUMS! I adore these cute little flowers. They look so great with pumpkins on the porch. They add a nice pop of color and contrast.
You can usually find Mums at places like Lowe’s, Home Depot and also grocery stores. I actually found the best mums at Ralphs one year!
Or you can go the faux route and you don’t have to worry about forgetting to water them (ahem, guilty…). I found these on amazon and they look so realistic!
5. Cotton Stems
Cotton Stems are another popular fall decor item. These lovely dark brown stems with soft fluffy white puffs at the end, are just the cutest!
Cotton stems are perfect for adding in texture. You can add them to a galvanized can, like I have, or place them in any other kind of metal or clay pot. You could even mix them with pumpkins inside a wooden crate!
6. Welcome Mat
A welcome mat is essential for any porch of course, but for fall it’s fun to have and dress it up a bit more. For fall, it would be fun to get a cute little fall themed doormat; however, you can also just stick with the one that’s out year round. A welcome mat just adds a nice layer to the floor to keep the eyes bouncing around the different areas of the porch.
7. A Patterned Rug
A patterned rug is wonderful for placing under the welcome mat to create a layered effect. Not only does this add some nice texture but, depending on the color/pattern you choose, can add some great contrast.
I love the black and white buffalo check for fall! I have this one.
8 . Wreath
I love dressing up the front door with a wreath! It’s just so very welcoming. It’s also so much fun to change out your wreath for each season, it is to me at least!
For fall, there are so many different wreath options you can do. A pretty cotton wreath is super cozy and great for a neutral fall scheme as well as a wonderful wheat wreath. And then there are so many gorgeous fall wreaths with multicolored foliage and pumpkins. It all depends on the look you’re trying to achieve.
I decided on this pretty little cotton wreath with pumpkins. I love the neutral tones of this wreath and I adore the “hello” lettering in the middle.
Also! I have a post here on some amazing fall wreaths that I found online.
9. Wooden Crates
Wooden crates are excellent for piling in a bunch of pumpkins or filling it with some fall flowers. You can also use crates to add some height to your porch arrangement. If your design looks a little too flat or all one level, place a crate on it’s side in the back, and you can place pumpkins, flowers or whatever you like on the top.
I chose wooden crates of different sizes with a white wash color to them. The rope handles that came with these crates are really unique, I LOVE them. I purchased mine at Hobby Lobby, but you can find them at Michael’s, Walmart, Target, and many other stores.
10. Bats
I know bats are a more Halloween, but I like to throw a little Halloween into my Fall decor since it’s right around the corner anyways! I think they add a bit more interest to the whole design.
Before I added the bats, I was feeling like there was something missing. There was just nothing on the walls, so it felt pretty bare.
Cue Bats!! You can find these guys in stores, online, or you can make them.
You can find these bats here!
11. Hay
Hay is so much fun to display on your porch for fall. I don’t have any in my porch design, but I do intend on adding in a couple bales next time around. Hay is another great element to use for adding in different levels. Place a bale of hay down and toss some pumpkins on the tops and down on the ground next to it and you’re all set! I always see hay at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Walmart, and Lowe’s or Home Depot.
12. Corn Stalks
The last of my ideas for decorating front porch for fall is corn stalks! Corn stalks is another item that I don’t have in my fall decor, but would be so much fun to include. Corn stalks are excellent for adding height to the whole porch arrangement and a creating interest against otherwise plain walls.
There you have it. That completes my list of small porch fall decorating ideas.
