Want to add farmhouse style to your home? Here’s How!
Howdy! I’m so glad you’re here! Today I’m going to show you 7 different farmhouse home decor ideas and how you can add this style to your home.
But first, what is farmhouse style decor you ask?
This particular home decor style is one that has become very popular and can be seen everywhere from stores to TV shows. The farmhouse style is mostly recognized for its rustic nature and relaxed feel. Farmhouse style revolves around a neutral palette and features a rustic and rural aesthetic with cozy furniture and accents. Galvanized steel pales, old wooden signs, and glass milk jugs are some of the details you will see with the farmhouse style.
So without further ado, here are the ways you can bring farmhouse character to your home.

Farmhouse Decor Ideas
1. Neutral Palettes
One thing is for sure when it comes to the farmhouse style, and that is that you will generally NOT see the different colors of the rainbow all over the walls and furniture. Everything is kept very neutral by sticking to whites, creams, beiges, and grey tones. This allows for the beautiful wood tones, well-placed greenery and various textures to really shine and be your accents, rather then bright colors.
Some of my favorite farmhouse paint colors are from Benjamin Moore:
2. Wood Accents
Next, the key to achieving that wonderful farmhouse look, is adding in LOTS of wood. So, because your walls may be very light and neutral, adding different elements of wood will pop and bring warmth to the room. There are many ways that you can use wood in your decor:
- Wood Beams
- Rustic Wood Mantels
- Wooden accents- candle holders, frames, figurines
- Wood furniture
- Wood floors
3. Signs and Lettering
Signs are a great way to add texture to your home. You can hang them or even lean them on walls or place them on counters. I’m talking signs that have that wonderful worn look like they’ve been around for years that usually consist of graphics and text. Also, having some throw pillows with farmhouse style lettering on them is a great way to go!
Here are some great examples that I love:
4. Plants
Adding some greenery to a room is a great way to bring in some natural elements, even if they are artificial. A touch of green here and there will draw your attention to those places in the room.
Artificial plants are awesome because you don’t need to worry about them not getting water! Try placing a variety of potted plants on the side table, kitchen counter, or entry table.
These faux plants add a hint of color and give the room a welcoming feel. Of course you can always do real plants too. I’m just not that brave!

5. Mixed metals
Galvanized steel and wrought iron are metals that work beautifully together and truly enhances the farmhouse look. Adding a variety of metals to the room is effective in adding some dimension. Choosing a wrought iron wall clock, for example, will really pop on those neutral walls, adding depth to the room. Placing your artificial plants in galvanized steel pails is also a wonderful way to achieve the farmhouse look.
Try adding different metals with these items:
- Big wall clocks
- Candlesticks
- Vases
- Objects/Figurines

6. Comfy furniture
Nothing is more inviting than walking into a room and seeing a big, soft, and cozy looking sofa that you just want to go curl up on. Slipcover sofas are especially popular when it comes to farmhouse decor. However, for more of a modern farmhouse design, a large sectional with clean lines can also be very effective. Also, a tufted headboard in a bedroom is great way to create that cozy farmhouse feel.
For cozy furniture, opt for:
- Slipcover sofas
- Big arm chairs
- Tufted ottomans
- Tufted headboards
Here are some cozy furniture options:
7. Cozy accents
Now let’s add some texture!
Lastly, to further warm up your space, adding some cozy accents will make a big difference. Drape a knitted throw over the sofa. Add some neutral throw pillows to your arm chairs and sofa as well. Place some yummy smelling candles on the coffee table alongside a stack of old books.
Cozy up the space with these pieces:
- Blankets
- Pillows
- Candles
- Old books
